Her victory had two key pillars: a landslide vote share and the undeniable consolidation of her message. In November’s first-round presidential election, she will represent democratic, progressive, humanist, and left-wing forces—alongside broad swathes of the electorate. Across political circles, civil society, and the press, Jara’s triumph has been hailed as an extraordinary political and electoral achievement for the Communist Party.

El Siglo. Santiago. Victorious in the governing coalition’s primaries, Jeannette Jara Román now begins her path to La Moneda (Chile’s presidential palace), representing democratic, progressive, humanist, and left-wing forces—and undoubtedly, broad sectors of the citizenry.
Her triumph had two vital points: a landslide vote share and a demonstrable entrenchment of her message.
By Sunday evening (29 June 2025), Jeannette Jara had secured roughly 60% of the votes, nearly 30 points ahead of her closest rival, Carolina Tohá, the Democratic Socialism (SD) candidate.
Her results revealed nationwide support, which will influence the presidential contest this November. She won in over 330 municipalities across the country—a monumental achievement.
The candidate of the Communist Party (PC), Humanist Action (HA), Christian Left (CL), and independent allies defied predictions from months earlier that the SD candidate was guaranteed victory. She staged a comeback, presenting concrete policies, positioning herself as approachable and people-centric—culminating in what is now a triumph for Chile’s left.
One less successful aspect was voter turnout, which, at the close of counting, had not surpassed 1.5 million—below the hoped-for 2 million. Still, the figure falls within the governing coalition’s expected margins.
It is now clear that Jeannette Jara will be the primary challenger to right-wing and far-right candidates, representing broad democratic, progressive, and left-wing sectors, and emerging as a viable choice for the electorate.
Tonight (June 29), figures across politics, civil society, and the press underscored that Jara’s victory marks a remarkable political and electoral achievement for the Communist Party—some calling it “historic”. Her candidacy as the standard-bearer for the entire governing coalition’s presidential bid is unprecedented, even by recent Latin American and global standards.
